Under the Microscope

“I, to commit murder?”

So began the first line of a short story I wrote as a teenager in high school.

With confidence, I let one of my friends read the story.

He gasped, “That’s what you want to happen!”

“No,” I tried to explain to him. “That’s not what I want to happen. It’s just writing. I’m using my imagination.”

Are you like him in thinking that a writer’s life is buried between the pages?

My sisters and I debate the issue all the time. One of them assures me that everything written says something about the author.

So are you really trying to tell me that Stephen King desires to be trapped in one of his gruesome horrors?

I counter, “I can create a character that is nothing like me.”

Anyway I think I scared off my friend those years ago with my amateur murder mystery.

My definition of writing: using the imagination to create characters and worlds that are make-believe for entertainment purposes.

What do you think? If placed under a microscope, are writers mirror images of their characters?

  1. No, I do not think so because people fantasize, dream, and have visions about life. An author creates the imaginary. A person’s mind can take them to places they’ve never been before.
